Hits From The Box #43 - Some Tasty New Releases From Old SM Faves

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Our first Hits From The Box for 2012 - really? Yeah, things are taking a while to come back to normal on Planet Masala - but define normal? This place is always in stasis. ANYway, you'll see that it's slightly different in that the bands below are all familiar ones. Well, at least to us here, as we posted about them in the past eighteen months. Well, they have gone from strength to strength and have new releases out, so we may as well crack open this Pandora's box and have at them, huh?

Christchurch has copped a ridiculous amount of shit from Mother Nature since we last caught up with Ipswich, the dudes responsible for the grungey ruckus of an EP of the same name. Since that was put out Steven Marr, like many other on the South Island, has had his hands full, but has kept his toe in the local scene, helping, putting out and playing with a plethora of acts. But of course Ipswich still remains the focus, and to prove it he has released a visceral punch of an EP, Living In A Stranger's Home, most notable for the eviscerating 'Alien Vs Sexual Predator'. They have Die! Die! Die!, Big Black and Slint counting as influences, so they are using the best playbooks. They have signed to MUZAI Records, so expect to hear more from them in 2012.

Ipswich - Alien Vs Sexual Predator
Ipswich - I Could Care Less

Evacuee impressed with their Property Type: Horseranch early last year. They followed this up with Donuts & Water, an album chock full of intricate, shouty, fun pop hooks. Two class albums in one year, both for free? Impressive. 2012 actually will see Evacuee slow down some, with minimal recording/playing scheduled. Not that ideas have dried up - a new album inspired by Judy Bloom called are you there god? it's me, margaret has been mooted, with songs penned, but only the cover art has seen the light of day. Band members are also branching out into other projects - Stephen and Travis are working on some sample based electronic stuff that is called DONAHUE, about none other than talk show behemoth Phil Donahue. Stephen is also doing something called Sports Duck that's dumb electronic/distorted guitar naff, alongside recording some acoustic guitar based songs that his girlfriend has had written for awhile (no name as yet). All of these projects will be posted on Murray Records. Meanwhile, jump into some tracks from Donuts & Water below.

Evacuee - Making Jokes
Evacuee - Monster Truck

Britches handed out one nasty, rusty, yet tasty demo last year. 2011 proved a busy year for the St Louis lads, ending with a new EP, Demonstration. The sinister leanings on the EP are coloured a darker shade of pitch this time around, yet it is also strangely more accessible. 2012 shows no signs of slowing down either, with "album" Democracy up for grabs on their Bandcamp here. Let the twisted times roll.

Britches - We're Both Ready

The Denver outfit StaG really impressed us last year with their Rifle Meeker album, so much so that it lingered on the fringes of our end of lists last year. 2012 has seen the release of 'Lived Like String', a single that distills all that came before into four minutes of unadulterated pop bliss. A new album is in the wings. Can't wait guys - seriously can no wait!

Porcupine are back! Those crazy kids from Wisconsin responsible for The Trouble With You, an extremely likable pop schlock record, released a 7" split on Big Action Records at the tail end of the year with Metal Ghosts, from Copenhagen/Berlin. It's a great piece o wax - here is one of Porcupine's efforts. It's seriously one of the best things they have done - more please!

Porcupine - Rooftops

Tunabunny really floated our boats in 2010 with their debut self-titled record. Well, it didn't take long before the Atlanta, Georgia spazzy kids came forth with album no 2. Minima Moralia, as evidenced from their Solar Sister 7", is an entirely different beast, with the chaotic swirl and bombast tied down to temper the tantrums. Instead we have a more melodic sound, and whilst some of the spazz-outs are missed, it is overall a sign of things to come - and we wont have to wait long. The third LP is due out mid year.

Tunabunny - Hurry Up
Tunabunny - Fake It, Faker

Finally we have those whacked out wizards The Fantasies, self-dubbed "America's greatest psychopop duo", The Fantasies are incapable of sticking to one genre, whilst perennially sticking tongue firmly into cheek. After a plethora of rel;eases over the past eighteen months, all of their singles, plus some newies, found their way onto a longplayer, appropriately titled The Fantasies. Love the cover art! Such irreverent revivalist aping should come across as a crap pastiche of better glories, but many of the tracks here are pretty ace to be true. You can grab the album for free here.

Solar Bunny

Tunabunny, if you had forgotten already, is one of Athens, Georgia's most kick arse bands - their debut LP last year blew me away. Deborah Harry fronting Deerhoof? Maybe. It was a hell of a lot of fun that's for sure.

Well the band have a second album in the works, Minima Moralia (once again on great lil label Happy Happy Birthday To Me), but before they heave that off the bridge and into our heads, they are giving us '(Song For My) Solar Sister.’ Its much more melodious, the temper tantrums dialled down to a Ritalin drenched fuzz, which gives it all a heady sense of detached malaise that could drop the shit at any second...but cuts off before it can do so. This new barely-reined-in intensity is an exciting about-take for the band, and offers a hell of a lot of intrigue as to what lies in store on the upcoming album. The B-side, 'Airport", seems to straddle both worlds. I really like both, and what Tunabunny are on here.

And lucky for you, Sonic Masala plans to take you on the Tunabunny journey. I hope that there is still some of that spastic ludicrousness left inside these kids, but the step up to the maturity plate is duly noted - and indelibly exciting.

Best Bits of 2010...by Tunabunny

So, we are a bit slow off the mark here, but it is December! Exciting times for the most part, due of course to the upcoming festive season, the parties, the presents, the drunken mishaps - but also because it means its the impending end of 2010. This is always interesting in music circles as everyone huddles over a drum fire (or a kiddie pool filled with ice and beer if you are south of the Equator) and discuss your favourites of the year. We love lists - they are endless sources of comment, debate, outright outrage, and sometimes a gift of their own (as in 'Shit, how did I ever miss that? Ive gotta go chase that up stat!')

So not only are we going to be giving a bevy of debatable lists of our own (best songs/live shows/albums/EPs/new bands etc), we thought we'd rope in some outside influences to put their two cents/pence/pesos in. So this month, be prepared to hear from diverse corners, just to allow you to get into the mindspace of some of the people we think really made our 2010.

First up is one of my favourite 'new bands', Athens Georgia messups Tunabunny! Their debut LP Tunabunny was a nice mashup of lo-fi dirtiness and Ponytail-esque spazzouts - a worthy release indeed - so I thought Id ask them what they liked most about the year that has seen them rise up like a burning pile of rubbish shot out of a cannon...

Tunabunny’s Top Ten of TwoThousandTen: a Tribute To Terrificness

1. The Fall – Your Future Our Clutter

2. Brigette got a 25-cent raise at the video store where she works

3. Toy Story 3

4. David Mitchell – The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet

5. David Shields – Reality Hunger: A Manifesto (Actually, pretty much anyone named David. Did David Lee Roth write a book this year?)

6. Reading Katy Perry’s wikipedia entry out loud

7. Brian Eno – Small Craft On A Milk Sea

8. American Profile – In the early part of the 20th century Alexis d’Toqueville wrote, ‘In order to understand America, you have to undestand baseball.’ In the early 21st century, you have to understand American Profile, a weekly insert in most newspapers—a clusterfuck of feel-good americana, celebrity profiles, and shameless advertising.

9. Kristen Hersh – Rat Girl: A Memoir

10. Vampire Weekend – Contra

Interesting guff indeed! From today onwards, look forward to a new list as we close down 2010, and also celebrate the end of the 1st year of everything that is Sonic Masala...

Subversive Flower Power Scuzz Shitstorms That Arent Animal Friendly

Tunabunny are another Athens Georgia band that are totally fucking with conceptions. Growing up in Athens, surrounded by a surplus of instruments and boredom, these three girls are throwing old (and almost cliched at the minute) influences such as the Raincoats and newer stylings like the ever popular Sleigh Bells, Ponytail and other hyperkinetic whirling dervishes into a Large Hadron Collider of their own instrumental making to explode people's minds. Or, in their own words, "Sun Ra and Abba meet to begin Intergalactic peace project. This happens at the precise moment when the Go-Go's meet the Fire Engines in the early 1980's." Nuff said...

Or is it? I heard Tunabunny's 'Flowers On The Stage' last night, and it was NOT what I was expecting. The opening droning riff echoed Sonic Youth before a whole lot of off kilter distorted moans and screeches melted my speakers. This noise segued into the (not so) slightly deranged catcalls about the goddamned flowers on the stage. This psycho head trip seems a lot longer than its three and a half minutes - and that is actually a very good thing. But if you want elongated Tunabunny, hunt down their debut recording from last year, Outer Space is the Center of the Earth - a 19-minute one-take journey recorded live in an afterhours coffee shop...

The girls are releasing their debut LP Tunabunny on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records - expect to see it scooping the Latin Grammys, inspiring the next Tracey Emin installation, inciting riots in Bangkok and putting the "is it a planet or isnt it?" debate about Pluto to rest by blowing the fucking thing up. And they will keep doing their thing regardless.
