Getting That Poppy Buzzed

Last year I got into a record by psych instrumentalist Imaad Wasif (you can read about it here). This has been in the pipeline for a while now, but Narnack Records is ready to release Electric Flower onto the global populace. Formed by Josh Garza (of Secret Machines) and Wasif, Electric Flower is preparing the release of their debut self-titled EP a week from today. They are quick to stress that this is NOT a side project - it is first and foremost their main day band. They met during the filming of an episode of Top of the Pops (this was when Wasif was a touring member of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs). The friendship and now musical partnership has coalesced from there into something that is very exciting indeed. Eastern infused drone psych rock malaise, anyone? Ill gladly overdose on it.

It will be available digitally and on limited foil stamped, red 10-inch vinyl (tasty - and only 500 copies available, get in there!)

6 Degrees of Sonic Youth #5 - Imaad Wasif

Playing alongside J Mascis' Sweet Apple at the Tee Pee Records showcase @ SXSW is Imaad Wasif. Imaad is a singer-songwriter of many talents and connections; he was a part of Lou Barlow's New Folk Implosion; he toured with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs for their Show Your Bones world tour; he is one of the Kids working with Karen O on the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack; his last album, The Voidist, included collaborations with Dale Crover of The Melvins (who have a tour coming up too), Chad Bamford (Weezer) and Greg Burns (Red Sparowes). The album is pretty damn good - check it out.

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
