Feet Teething

One of the strangest, most wonderful acts oozing out of the cracks of Brisbane is the improvisational trio FEET TEETH, a band that doesn't get anywhere near the recognition they deserve, not even in the avant-garde community. I have been trying to get something out of theirs on the label for a little while now (it will come!), but until we find a will and way, there is Teething, three live recordings the band did that you can get now here. Utilising drums, marimba, trumpet and electronics (including their ever reliable C64 reimaginings), the band tap into a free-jazz purgatory that is often presents a corporeal, cacophonous cocoon to slip inside and melt away in. It isn't restive, narcoleptic music however - there is an errant restlessness to the instrumentation here, even in the spaces between the chaos - but there is a world being created that requires complete immersion, zero outside-world intrusions. Kahl Monticone joins them on the electric guitar on 'twenty seven minutes and twenty seconds' (yes, the three extremely long jams are named after their length, which is perfect really), a natural freeform extension here. This is the kind of stuff that the outlier intelligentsia that populate the feted Cafe Oto here in London would lap up - but it goes almost unnoticed in Brisbane. Don't let this continue - get behind FEET TEETH and acts of its ilk pronto.

Bludgeoning The Bunny

Improv bands can be ugly beasts - there is only so much noodling "jams" one can take before murderous rampages are the only acceptable retaliation. Then there is Spirit Bunny, a relatively new Brisbane band born out of the marvelously maladroit meanderings of FEET TEETH (supported here by Ghost Notes/Tiny Spiders skinsman Cam Smith). Their take on their shtick? "Grit Hop - Phat beats and twee melodies through a haze of circuit bent Casio noise and C64 synth." It's an apt description for what is an incredible melange of squelched cross-pollination hip-hop instrumentation, a Frankenstein's monster of noise, melody and insidious beats. Listen to 'Gold & Brown' - awesomeness, until the breakdown in the final thirty seconds scares the shit out of you...

$10 Trip To Scandinavia!!!

So Melbourne-based ambient tricksters No-Way Sweden would have you believe. The duo (playing as a trio tonight) are headlining tonight's Sonic Masala Presents at The Waiting Room after the release of their excellent Iceland/England LP. They are being supported by FEET TEETH (who have a new record under their belt also), and the first show ever from Blank Realm offshoot Financiers. It all kicks off at 8pm, check out more here. Jazz = Eating With Your Feet Teeth

It's great to see such a vibrant experimental scene in Brisbane, and one of the bands that rove on the farther uncharted plains is FEET TEETH. The trio - Joel Saunders on trumpet, electronics; Paul Young on drums and "objects"; Kate Thomas on marimba and Commodore 64 (for real) - take free form jazz "structure" to a different, stop-motion-as-noise level, especially as one of their premiere instruments is a reconfigured Commodore 64. Their shows are understandably heavy on the improvisation, which makes for continual cerebral discoveries.

The band have an album in the wings called Aphtae Epizooticae (out through HelloSquare), and you can sample the single 'Hinschu' below, and you can pick it up, alongside remixes by Sydney's Brain Drain and Subsea and a non-album recording, right here. FEET TEETH are also playing a Sonic Masala show on Friday May 3 at The Waiting Room alongside Melbourne's No-Way Sweden and the first-ever airing of Financiers, a side project for Dan Spencer and Luke Walsh of the ever-excellent Blank Realm. Well here it is, the "Big" announcement. It's actually been floating around the traps and the social medias for a while, but it ain't official before it's launched here. This month marks one year since Sonic Masala started supporting the local bands of Brisbane, putting on DIY shows for friends and bands that I like and want to help out. We have had a single launch, an album launch, and even had a couple interstate and one NZ band join the fray. The future looks incredibly rosy for this arm of Planet Masala, with some bigger shows, niche shows and such planned for 2013, but let's forget about the future and party in the present! As part of local venue The Waiting Room (who are also celebrating its first year putting on amazing shows) we are putting on a three night extravaganza! Its mainly to thank everyone for supporting us over the past year, but also to see bands that we like and who like us. So its a big love in, basically!
