Happy Damage In The Jacuzzi

Back in 2009, before I started Sonic Masala with Paul, he made me a mixtape (awww!) of all the bands that he thought I would be into. On that list was stuff from Thee Oh Sees, Meth Teeth, Vivian Girls and Monotonix - most of the others I can't remember (I lost the CD when I had to move back over to London from Australia last year...) One band I do remember was the deliriously scuzzy insanity of Miami garage rockers Jacuzzi Boys (the track - 'Island Avenue' - the type of track that Brisbane mates Tiny Migrants used to spit out). I have always been into their brand of scrappy, explosive sounds, and new EP Happy Damage is more of the same. The darker 'Sun' is more my cup of rock, but the explosive title track is heaps of fun too. Blast it out of the speakers to see out your Sunday.

Caught Up In The Jacuzzi, Boys

Miami garage bastards Jacuzzi Boys are preparing their third album (self-titled, it'll be out next month on Hardly Art). There have been glimpses of what to expect on this album - things have been glossed up, sanded out, refined, retooled. The two tracks on offer are two sides of the same adrenaline-fuelled coin - 'Domino Moon' is crystalline in sound and urgent in purpose, a gritty heartbeat hidden beneath shimmering production, whilst 'Be My Prism' is 60s bubblegum pop-psych re-appropriated for 21st century fringe-dwellers (with a Sgt Pepper's horn section bizarrely coming out of the woodwork), both of which are consumed far too quickly. Can you get an earache from listening too quickly? Jacuzzi Boys know the answer.

Another Bruise Rises From The Cruise

The amazing idea that was the Bruise Cruise - a floating festival from Florida to the Bahamas with the likes of Thee Oh Sees, Black Lips and Ty Segall on board - went off without a hitch last month. The group behind it (including cruise director Ian Svenonius, the guy behind The Nation Of Ulysses and Chain and the Gang) put out a 7" split with most of the bands getting involved. The first one had Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees (read our review here), and Ive just got my sweaty palms on the second volume. This one is split between Jacuzzi Boys and Vivian Girls - Boys and Girls, hand in hand - and it is just as killer. 'Your Flags' is Jacuzzi Boys at their... The other volumes include Turbo Bats and Quintron & The Pussycat, and Black Lips w/ The Strange Boys (although their contribution, 'American Radio', we have already covered as it is on a separate release with Natural Child).

Jacuzzi Boys/Nobunny

I havent really harped on about how much I dig Nobunny's First Blood. It is goddamned catchy, fun, stupid, and idiot savant style brilliant. I definitely havent spoken much about Jacuzzi Boys' No Season from last year. Both are unadulterated joys of garage punk fun, and really need more of you to buy these pieces of vinyl and wear out your needle on them.

Good, cos these two acts have made an unholy alliance in this 7" split brought to us by Scion A/V Records' brilliant Garage collection (which also features the likes of Black Lips, Pierced Arrows (ex-Dead Moon), the Spits and The Dirtbombs). 'Someone Else's Brain' has the Fluffy One in acoustic mode, yet still with his skewed adolescent musings intact, whilst Jacuzzi Boys continue their guttural dominance with 'Coral Girls', a sweaty number that swaggers its way from the Florida swamps to your joyous ear. Great stuff, just to remind you how great they are.
