PREMIERE - Yerevan Tapes Serve Us Up A Psalm'N'Locker

Good morning! Sorry to rattle the cages with such a pun, but Italian drone artist Luca Garino HAS called his solo output Psalm'N'Locker, and is in a band called How Much Wood Would A Woodchuck Chuck If A Woodchuck Could Chuck Wood, so...deal with it.

The following are exclusive excerpts from Psalm'N'Locker's forthcoming Op. 1 Music For Dreamachine  out through the always intriguing Yerevan Tapes. If you aren't familiar, you have missed out on some stellar releases such as Heroin In Tahiti, Cannibal Movie and German Army, all releases I have written about and love and  that require instant perusal if you aren't familiar. Psalm'N'Locker's efforts are already at that level for me too - a one track, 28 minute exploration of beats, that idea of when two notes compete on slightly different frequencies. The entire composition has been inspired by the British experimentalist and "prophet" Brion Gysin's Dreamachine - this guy was amazing and truly ahead of his time, read more about him here. Psalm'N'Locker manages to recreate that same trance-like hallucinatory state through searching out the imperfections, whether strong or weak, of a frequency played through two air organs that are not exactly what you would call "tuned". The result is pretty immense - below are two exclusive excerpts. You can get OP.1 Music For Dreamachine here.

Music's Mondo Holocaust

I have spoken about the excellent Cannibal Movie before, the Italian drums & organ psych duo who brought out the mindbending Avoria cassette through Sound of Cobra. Now they are back with Mondo Music. Two long sinuous tracks that easily supersede their past recordings, Mondo Music is a pagan voyage through fizzing synapses, captured in an underground cathedral of ochres and shadows, briefly glimpsed faces and masks, flickering firelight and an epiphany ripped from your soul. The second track is especially entrancing, an ambient meditation that coalesces into a demonic dance, the haunting organ and maniacal percussion interweaving in an orgiastic rhythm that is sensual and base. This is incredible stuff, the kind of psych experiment that goes beyond the extremes of genre and enters your pores, fusing with your membrane, refusing to die.

Mondo Music is available through Yerevan Tapes in pea green cassette form here. It's a great release.

Raven Steals My Hovering Resonance (Not Really)

Dammit, Raven Sings The Blues beat me to this by a day! Goes to show what wading through a backlog of music will do to ya. Still, RSTB is an amazing music blog, if you don't already frequent their page and delight in their delicacies, then you aren't living.

Sound Of Cobra put out a cool release by Cannibal Movie last year (word is that CM are bringing out a full length release this year - watch this space...), and now they have mixed blood with the ever excellent Expo 70 (AKA Justin Wright) for Hovering Resonance, a swirling, coalescing masterpiece of motorik haze. It is nuts how many releases of great consistency this dude puts out - it's hard to even ascertain where to start! But I think that this rivals anything he put out last year, including the Night Mist cassette he put out on Nurse Etiquette, or Inaudible Bicoastal Trajectory which was far spacier. This has a hedonistic bent that is yet somehow more palatable, and that isn't a detriment. There is a lot of playback value on this one. The krautrock drive underneath the title track in particular will have you coming back for more.

You can grab Hovering Resonance here - I highly recommend this one.

Streaming Cannibal Movies...

New label Sound Of Cobra sent me this, their debut release from Italian psych marauders Cannibal Movie. Yep, be very wary searching for these guys on Google...

Anyway, its some suitably wigged out psychotropic jams, alienating the idea of vocals and guitar (by not having any) whilst upping the ante on organ and drums (of which there is a lot). Five repetitive sonorous circle jams that is as primal as it is technologically left of centre - a technicolour ritualistic sacrificial rite of passage.

I have to say - I really, REALLY dig Avorio. Its one of the few albums Ive received in the mail in recent times where I wasn't expecting much but within a few seconds my preconceptions were thoroughly shattered. Its one of those weird listens where even though it creeps you out, the incessant tribal rhythms have you bopping along to it.

Maybe its apocalyptic music - an aural equivalent to Sadako's videotape, a true "the music made me do it" experience, whereby Im being brainwashed by the mindblowing sonics on display. You can envisage this in a physical form, played out on scoured VHS, a true video nasty - yet its much more evocative and nuanced than that, thus elevating it about bargain bin bans and into Argento giallo territory. Maybe. Either way, Im hooked. And if you needed a soundtrack for the next meeting of your local cannibalisation cult, these guys have the spellbinding mantras down pat.

I have the entire album streaming below - be sure to get over to Sound Of Cobra and get yourself a copy. Im looking forward to my copy that's for sure. And as a special bonus, I have the second track off it below! Take it home, put it on, space out - just don't let it get the taste for flesh...
