Shield Your Eyes from this...

How have I not posted about Shield Your Eyes' latest L.P Theme From Kindness yet? In all honesty I've been meaning to post about this prolific post-hardcore London trio for months. They've just got a 'full' release for Theme From Kindness a week ago, although I happily separated with my dosh months ago when I saw Shield Your Eyes put in a riotous, compact set, supporting Action Beat and Stig Noise (yeah I know, what a line-up) at The Macbeth, a tour that also included a date in Oxford courtesy of Poor Girl Noise. In short it seems to have taken a while for their latest 12" to see the light of day it truly deserves - but there's a fourth album coming right on its heels.

But I get ahead of myself. Shield Your Eyes have been around for a while, this being their third L.P in as many years. If you're looking for a slap in the face of indescribable melodic, post-hardcore noise to wake you up on a Wednesday morning then Shield Your Eyes should be right up your street. Out on Saddam Hussein Records (read the intro, its genius) Theme From Kindness is a steal at nine quid for the 12 inches of beastly lo-fi guitar riffs and grinding time changes.

The band are currently touring Europe, then are hooking up with Don Vito for a shed load of UK dates including an awesome sounding Saddam Hussein Records night with Don Vito and Cuss Words at The Old Blue Last, November 23rd.

Death by Stig Noise

Ever danced a samba with the devil? Ever moshed to Lucifer's loose ska? Ever jigged with Satan's Orkestar while his guitar wielding noise minions shredded your face?

No, neither have I, but I think Liverpool's Stig Noise MMX are treading on the Dark One's toes. I was witness to this raucous depravity of a live set when Stig Noise MMX supported Bletchley's finest, Action Beat, at the Macbeth a couple of weeks back. Live it is insane massive screaming noise - recorded its like be toyed with. Driving rhythms and brass push intense, experimental hooks ever onwards, changing pace and direction on whim. You'll dance like a puppet on strings made of sick brutal joy slime. This band has more ideas and twisted fun in one set than most bands manage in a lifetime, its great stuff.

Stig Noise MMX also have a healthy DIY edge, seemingly only recording splits or Vs with other bands. Their current split 12" with Barberos can be downloaded here for only £3, or you can order the 12" here. Its a must and its meager five tracks are enough to have kept me happy for weeks.

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.
