Friday Cover Up - Future Primitives

Ah, another Sonic Masala staple is back!

I missed out on telling you about The Future Primitives, a South African garage rock band that put out a great little record in This Here's The Future Primitives last year. Well, after the world neglected to go to hell in a handbasket last December (it's still doing that, just a lot more incremental than the Mayans thought), the trio decided to hammer out a bunch of tracks that they like to listen to. The aptly titled Songs We Taught Ourselves features thirteen covers from the likes of Link Wray, Captain Beefheart and Bo-Weevils amongst many others, and they are suitably lo-fi shambolism par excellence. It’s a lot of stupid fun – and what else would you expect. Head over here to download the album, listen to it below!

Here Comes Da Boom...

The Boom Bang are from Oklahoma City. They are putting out their first 7" record, Bummer Camp, next Friday through Guestroom Records. Its a tasty 4-track that cleverly showcases both the sound of the band and their temperament also...

SOUND - messy, sloppy, scuzzy, fuzzy, poppy, punky, spunky, funky.

TEMPERAMENT - knockabout, layabout, party-hard, spazztastic.

Their single is, funnily enough, on the B side - 'Run Way Away' - but in my opinion there are stronger tracks on here, including the one I have below, 'We Skeletons'. Its a hell of a lot of fun. Their reference points - from Davie Allan, Dick Dale, and Link Wray, garage bands such asThe Cramps, The Gruesomes, and The Swamp Rats, and contemporay bands like Wavves, The Intelligence, Thee Oh Sees, and Crocodiles - speak volumes.

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
