Lawrence Rothman ft Kim Gordon

Let's close out the evening (and my last evening away from my "day" job - I am filled with dread and despair) with this collaboration between LA artist Lawrence Rothman and rock goddess Kim Gordon. Well actually it's a much bigger collaboration than that - although Gordon's iconic vocals provides untold strength and hubris, there is the magnificent Angel Olsen with additonal backing vocals, and a backing band that includes Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeah's), M83's Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Warpaint's Stella Mogzawa, and Active Child. It's operatic and ostentatious, but at this time of night it's pretty magical too. Good night, kids.

6 Degrees of Sonic Youth #1 - Yoko Ono Plastic Band

Im a little behind the 8 ball here - first slow on the uptake with Mogwai's first podcast, now this - Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon jamming with Yoko Ono?!? Well its happening. Moore and Gordon are temporarily a part of Ono's Plastic Band, as the below clip attests. Its shot at a rehearsal at Brooklyn's Academy of Music a couple weeks ago. Two memorable nights ensued (so I can imagine), including a section where Ono, Gordon and Moore played as a trio! We really missed an occasion to see some great creative minds come together...

And as will be the trend for the next few pieces today, there are tenuous links to all of them via the almighty power that is Sonic Youth.

NB - Im laid up in bed with a bad back, so Sonic Youth appears to be the only thing with the requisite powers to get me through the day...

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
