Kamikaze Danya Loses It Over Teenage Burritos

Here's an enamouring 7" that came out a few weeks ago through Volar records from San Diego band Teenage Burritos. The band is a bit of a "supergroup" (as in there are members of Christmas Island and Plateaus in the mix, with Andreas from Swedish killers Holograms appearing on the B-side track 'Kamikaze'), and this debut single 'Danya' is a lot of sunny yet grimy take on upper echelon punk. The tracks were recorded on an 8-track where the tape caught jammed, so the warble throughout the two tracks is accidental yet sublime - offering an off-kilter immediacy. 'Kamikaze' in particular slays, and the band have intimated that their upcoming LP (that will be out through Volar and Burger Records any day now - we'll be back on that when it hits our clammy hands) will follow in this vein. They do remind me of a more urgent younger sibling of Veronica Falls, which is a great thing indeed. I don't care how young or old the burritos are, just give me a lifetime supply.

Christmas Island Crack Bones, Meth Teeth Depart In Control

Dammit Sacred Bones, give me some time to breathe! Or at least have decent listening time to your other excellent releases...

This is a little different though, as it's two ace bands putting out separate 7" singles. Christmas Island kick off proceedings, hitting us with fast paced, jangly indie shambolism. The urgency on offer with 'Drawing Skulls' evokes Kings Of Leon if they remained stuck in Holy Roller Novocaine (as they should mercifully have done) and jammed with Natural Child. Then its Meth Teeth's turn to drunkenly sedate us, their drug-fuelled malaise the perfect counterpoint. I loved Meth Teeth's ultra lo-fi album Everything Went Wrong from last year, and the two tracks here let us know they are still delving in this subversive, catatonic brilliance (I should say were - they are unfortunately no more! RIP!). Four tracks, two bands, one massive slab of awesome-o.

Take These Tiny Migrants For Your Health - And Get Belatedly Covered Up!

I went to my first stand alone gig on Friday night since arriving back in Brisbane - and already Ive been heavily impressed by a local act. Tiny Migrants opened up for Mark Sultan, and are a five piece that specialise in murky, scuzzy garage pop a la The Intelligence - they even did a great rendition of Christmas Island's 'Pre-Apocalyptic', which was pretty ace. The boy/girl vocal chants were good, as was the twin guitar attack - but I was most impressed by the driving bass that really propelled the band down the oil-slick runway to destruction. Their CD-R For Your Health is almost a carbon copy of their setlist, so its a nice lil keepsake, and an indicator that these guys are on the up and up.
