Sydney basement dreamers Shrapnel have released Carpet Yankers, a cool cat cassette from Sam Wilkinson (Day Ravies, Mope City, King Tears Mortuary etc etc, out through his Strange Pursuits label). Shrapnel is Wilkinson letting fly, embracing his inner Bob Pollard, Stephen Malkmus, Jason Lowenstein and Calvin Johnson. From the frayed slacker bilge of chugging opener 'Chicken Fantasy', to the Sebadoh-meets-wasted Lennon in Erskineville warp of 'Floss The Boss' and the Doug Martsch fronting Superchunk in a tin can of 'Face On The Desk' - there are a lot of cantankerous, haphazard, blistering in the shade rock on offer. But there is as much time for cracked reflection, as is heard on the thin synth and crackling vocals wasting away on the title track, or the nascent acoustic dement-folk of 'Procrastinate/Disintegrate'. By eschewing the warm wall of sound of Day Ravies and the lo-fi (S)andpit growl of Mope City, Shrapnel is an experiment in freefall thoughts, allowing everything to ferment and take root, no matter how weird and wild. My favourite tracks (for the moment, the mood shifts like a serpent in the sludge) is the wonky, anaesthetised rock with added Beatle riff 'Duty To Do' and the Breeders cruise closer 'Stewing With You'. Yeah, there are a shedload of references rolled out today, but when listening to Carpet Yankers that is what it feels like - a carefree, bloody talented performer playing with the hits - and winning. Grab it here.

Black Surf, Sludge Gum

Black Gum are back! Those crazy guys from Austin Texas that brought is the grimy grunge garage of their self-titled cassette last year (see what I thought of it here) have a two-track 7" out called 'Surf/Sludge', and although the production is 100% cleaner, it provides further proof that the trio write great catchy tunes. You wanna know what else is awesome? They have done a whole set of Beat Happening covers in the near past. So yeah - they are awesome.
Check it out here (it's out on Monofonus Press).

Life Partners Are For The Dogs

I haven't been able to get this album out of my head this past week. Ryan over at Sophomore Lounge Records flicked me this ages ago, and it somehow fell through the cracks (my two month break is still proving to be a pain in the arse...) Their first release for 2012, Dogs is a cassette which shows Aaron Osbourne (formerly of State Champion and Plows, among others) as Life Partner. This new batch of bummed-out, midwestern grunge folk is something else - its launch out of the bedroom and into the alleyways and shadowed doorways is a welcome if still uneasy experience. The beauty of this album is that it is harsh, bummed out rock, yet rock it does, like a proverbial motherfucker. Osbourne's fitted himself with a band and is so much stronger because of it. Taking inspiration from Pissed Jeans, Beat Happening and Springsteen's Nebraska (really), Dogs is a killer leftfield release. The sweaty desperation inherent everywhere on this track will give you a fever that only more of the same will wash away.

Give in to the incessant throb of Dogs here.
