tUnE-yArDs Is The Bizness

Merrill Garbus AKA tUnE-yArDs is preparing to release her follow-up to 2009's great release BiRd BrAiNs. Its titled w h o k i l l, and the new single, 'Bizness' is off it. Its not a new track per se - it has been a live staple for almost two years now, and one of the live favourites - but its great to revisit it, and have it in physical form. Garbus is still on song here, so her new album will come with a fair bit of expectation around here on Planet Masala (see our live review from Cargo last year here).

w h o k i l l comes out April 19th on 4AD.

(NB - I only found out today that Garbus was the lead vocalist and instrumentalist of Sister Suvi, who are sadly with us no more. A bit slow on the uptake there...)

Missed Bands Are Anything But Dead(wood)

Im not sure how this slipped through to the keeper, as I am more than a casual fan of these Canadians - but sadly Sister Suvi is no more. Their album Now I Am Champion was a cracker, and one sorely overlooked last year in my opinion. Nevertheless, the beauty of music is that it lives on. So here is a taste of what you may have missed - the opening track off the album - if you like, purchase it from their label Common Cloud. It is a great little album. RIP.

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
