Right The Ship On A Unicorn Tonight!

Those gritty Nottingham-based instrumental fuckers Alright The Captain are preparing to launch their debut LP SNIB through a slew of UK dates this month, starting off at The Unicorn in Camden tonight, where they'll be playing alongside a few other likeminded acts. This will be a very promising gig from a very underrated act - get along to see em in such a tiny and intimate venue on a drunken Friday night, you will not be disappointed.

Pagans in Angel

In Brendan's post about Alright The Captain Oxford trio HREÐA received a mention. One thought crossed my mind - "Why haven't I posted about HREÐA by now?" It seems to me that HREÐA have been pushing their brand of melodic riff driven post rock around the Oxford scene for a while now. It's the kind of mathy post rock which has formed the very bed rock for Oxford bands over recent years, and while some may have moved into different territories, more hardcore and noise etc, HREÐA have gone on to perfect the art and refine their craft, moving away from their more cinematic sound, ditching the cello, and taking the more direct route. You might think you know what you're getting with HREÐA, but trust me its hard to predict a pagan goddess.

The 7" Dead Horses is out on Ingue Records, and well worth checking out. A taste below, and try and catch them this Friday supporting Alright The Captain and Order of the British Empire at Zenith, Angel.

Nautical Destruction

Just stumbled over the sounds of this Nottingham-formed 3 piece on Myspace (whoever said that social network was dead is an idiot). Instrumental with hard math rock leanings, Alright the Captain have much in common with the brilliant And So I Watch You From Afar - intricate guitar leads, suddenly alternating time patterns and a tender blend of lustrous dexterity and bludgeoning force. So if love those guys (I do!), then you might find something here. Try out their new EP 123 - they are playing in London @ Zenith this Friday supporting Order of the British Empire and Hreda, in themselves tidy acts -all for 3 squid! I think this will be a pretty special gig, so get down to Angel and enjoy!

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
