"Have You Seen The Way Flies Congregate Around A Corpse?" - Christian Fitness (World Keeps Turnin' #1)

Well I can't even anymore, the world is doomed etcetera. But you have to keep trying right? So today's three posts are about three acts that always hit the spot, never give up their integrity and spirit regardless of what's in front of them.

I'm going to start with Andy Falkous - Falco, from (current) Future of the Left and (past) Mclusky. He has written some of the most bruising, eviscerating, hilarious guitar rock songs in living memory in either of the above forms. His seemingly inexhaustible cynicism and derision of the world has meant that his songs a relevant, prevalent and prescient ("You Need Satan More Than He Needs You" is ringing perversely true right about now). But he can't stop there - the geyser of angular snark knows no bounds, so he has become a one man band in Christian Fitness. This Taco Is Not Correct is the third in the CF series, and fits somewhere between his two musical guises. More of the playful guile and groove of Future Of The Left, with enough space for buzzsaw fire and brimstone that made Mclusky so energising and bracing. Everything about this album points to the crumbling present - the cover art of an angel taking a shit in shame; the opening song 'Donald Takes A Train' opens with the line "Have you seen the way flies congregate around a corpse?"; song titles such as 'Date Celebrities Or Die' and 'More Skin For The Skineaters'; lyrics that are ripped from the horrors of real life bigotry and hatred, as can be witnessed on 'Happiness Is For Amateurs', where standing up for a Chinese family being racially abused on a train ends poorly for all involved. The sound is massive for this kind of project (helped in no small part by best man and Mclusky/FOTL mainstay Jack Egglestone on drums), and goes from dirges to jaunts to spikes to sludgy punk busters ('Direct Debit With Ray Winstone's Disembodied Head', 71 seconds of madness and broken down guitar solos) and weirder outliers (is Falco trying to go all Robyn or Die Antwoord with his childlike vocals over Gothic haunt organ on 'I Swear I'll Get Married In Those Earrings'?). It's a carnivalesque gallery of grotesquery, a punk freakshow of hawked diatribes and maniacal eye rolls and brow twitches, spoken word of the kitchen sink idiot savant, scuzz pop to colour the fringes of a world gone to shit. When a line like  "if your best friend handed you his dick and asked you to fillet and cook it…. would you comply, without a second thought, without a lot of money on it?" can become part of an anthemic screed about the end of the world as we know it, you know you are on to a winner.

Falco, please never change. We don't have Lenny Bruce or Bill Hicks - but we have you.

NOTE: FOTL are touring at the end of the year with the likes of USA Nails, Idles and Death Pedals - their show at The Garage (apparently their London home) December 1 promises to be massive - get tickets here).

50 Futures...And The Sky Is Falling

The launch of Future Of The Left's latest diatribe, The Peace & Truce Of..., is almost upon us, and as celebration we have a third cut from it. '50 Days Before The Hun' is just like 'The Limits of Battleships' before it in that there is a decided sparseness to the compositions - even more so here. It may seems strange to not hear Falco and his cronies lathering all sonic space with apocryphal noise, but this spiked sense of space lends a cut-rate desperation to the efforts, a cracked absurdity lending weight to lines like "seasalt crackers with the seasalt taken out/then served to the grateful twats." The handclaps and high-pitched "na-na-nas" add to the off-kilter chicanery. Don't forget the trio are playing Electric Ballroom on April 21.

WWFOTLD

Still feeling the blues? Let's see if Future Of The Left can shatter them. They have followed up the spiked 'The Limits of Battleships' with the brilliantly monikered 'If AT&T Drank Tea What Would BP Do?' in the leadup to their album The Peace & Truce of Future Of The Left and a UK tour, both in April. Again the bass is so fat, a Sherman tank rolling, roiling and destroying, pure propulsion with total control. Again, the drumming pummel and punish. Again, Falkous is seething out of the corner of a cracked smirk and deadened eyes. Barbed cynicism in a cyanide pill - pre-order the album here. Future Of The Left are playing Electric Ballroom April 21 - get tix for that here.

There Are No Limits In The Future Of The Left

Can't complain about a Monday morning when you get to start it with a new Falco special. Welsh legends Future Of The Left are back with a new album on the horizon, called The Peace & Truce Of Future Of The Left. The first taste is 'The Limits Of Battleships', a decidedly barbed satirical song, a jerky punch driven primarily by thick, spiked bass and skittish drums. Falco's spits barbed lines dipped in vitriol and sardonic hilarity that slash and serrate ('Two drinks for the limits of cool'. 'Two drinks for accountant's, 'Have you know anyone who can wear a hat indoors/Without guns or bodyguards to impress on the bare-headed hordes', 'Everybody has a prick in the game...There's no girls in this team', 'No drinks for the enemy combatants, no drinks for the door staff', 'It burns like writer's block'...). It is acerbic and harsh, sure, but there is a lot of space in this track; it isn't designed to rock in the most traditional sense. It is made to unnerve, to entice you in before denying you a proper release. The joke, as always, is on you.

The album comes out in April, when FotL head out on tour on the following dates:

Scared Of Christian Fitness

Being a rabid Mclusky/Future Of The Left fan, it would be remiss of me if I didn't shine some light on Falco's "solo" gear, Christian Fitness. A project that came about due to unexpected unemployment (yes, even the best of us are privy to corporate buggery), the album I Am Scared Of Everything That Isn't Me (the amazing titles never cease) doesn't feel throwaway but a natural extension of FOTL, flitting back and forth from the delightfully acerbic bilge pump of a Welshman's canon with zeal. And why not? When touring and playing music is your lifeblood yet monetary constrainst don't allow for continual stints of sonic sustenance, and even the promise of funds through the millstone of the 9-to-5 is skittishly torn from your mewling mouth, what better is there to pour the frustrated energy into a new creative more? It's difficult to focus on one element, but I will state that I always like the slow-fast, quiet-loud changeovers that Falkous employs in songs - it doesn't have the breakneck velocity/ferocity of possibly the best of his songs, but he knows when it is important to revel in the lead-in, the tension, the slow build, the lyrics underscored before the noise falls in. They tend to the longest songs on the album, and oft overlooked, yet their lack of brevity is calibrated for impact. Therefore 'Disturbing The Ache' is my current favourite on the album. It doesn't have the same impact on me as say 'Lapsed Catholics', but that's probably because 'Disturbing The Ache' is more...twisted. Although it changes daily - tomorrow I'm likely to be obsessed with 'Teeth' or maybe the straight up punk swirl flaildown that is 'Feel Good Hit Of The Second Trimester' or the viscous closer 'The Earth Keeps Its Secrets'... And that is where I Am Scared... is at - it's a twisted melange of twiddling thumbs and itchy trigger fingers, forked tongues and flying spit, grins of chagrins and howls of maniacal disdain. And may he never change. Grab the CD here - he needs the money - and believe me, you do too.

Getting Your Kicks With The Local Girls

Sour Puss Records have another crazy band to ram down our throats. Local Girls are based in Brixton and call themselves a sexually inappropriate alt sleaze band, so they will more likely kick your teeth in if you don't buy them a pint quick smart, and forget the small talk. Their record Deluxe Kicks comes out next week and it's a narcissistic melange of noise and obnoxiousness. They are brats, wailing from licks they've stolen from Andy Falkous' spit-flecked playbook, abrasive talk-speak stories that acts coy for that split second so that your defences are rendered obsolete. Who would have thought that being relentlessly goaded would be so much fun?

VIDEO VACUUM - Future Of The Left, Girls, Colours, Witch Hats

A slow start to the week, but here are some luscious moofies to drag you out of the doldrums, yeah?

It's common knowledge that I have infinite amounts of respect for Andy Falkous. I'm a bit of a groupie, and getting to speak to him last year before the release of his band Future Of The Left's Polymers Are Forever EP was one of the crowning achievements of my life thus far. Now we are creeping ever closer to the release of their third album, The Plot Against Common Sense, and to whet our appetites (it's not out til May, dammit!) we have the video for teaser track 'Sheena Was A T-Shirt Salesman'. Ill be brutally honest - it's not their best. But it's good, and Falkous' lyrics are as acerbic, drenched in bile and tickled pink as ever. It has me on tenterhooks - I'm hoping for upwards and onwards...Plus it's good to see the Blue Man Group getting a job.

Girls was one of the best bands to grace us with their presence on the recent Laneway Festival circuit, and I've grown to embrace Christopher Owens and his inherent revivalist shtick more and more. Here is the rather disquieting flick for 'My Ma' and as always it is somewhat sumptuous and off putting, like a Gregory Crewdson photograph come to life. Intensely alluring.

Now I received this in the mail only the other day, and immediately thought it was a new track from British slacker rock band Colours. Turns out there is an artist right here in Australia called Colours, and 'In The Summer' is his contribution to the incoming compilation by Electronic Voice Records. It's hazed dream pop of the highest order, and has me hankering for more of the same. As far as I know there isn't a full length in the immediate future, but the compilation will be out on cassette as well as 12" vinyl soon, with pre-order starting March 10 (this Saturday!) here.

Finally we have Melbourne's Witch Hats, who have had a bit of a directional change of late as witnessed on their stellar second LP Pleasure Syndrome. Here is the new video for 'In The Mortuary' off that very album.

NOW GET BACK TO WORK!

Banned Books Grip The Guillotine

Banned Books have done something pretty amazing here. They have remixed current "it" hip hop crew Death Grips (whose Ex-Military album is great, actually) by layering it on top of their track 'Malio'. Its been on constant rotation over here (alongside the aforementioned Future Of The Left EP and God Bows To Math LP), so waste no time - have at it already!

And for added pleasure, here is a live version of 'Malio' where they are joined by the amazing Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier! He is so mental! Just something to get you excited about the imminent Australian tour in January 2012!

And finally, to end this day in triumphant manner - here is Ex-Military in its entirety! So good...

The Future Is Decidely Left - And In December

I interviewed the absolutley fucking amazing Andy "Falco" Falkous yesterday. Such an incredible guy - fifteen minutes was not enough! Future Of The Left have an EP coming out in November on Xtra Mile Records called Polymers Are Forever. Its, as expected, amazing. Im particularly loving the title track and the closing number, 'Destroywhitchurch.com'. Here's what Falco had to say, verbatim, about the EP plus some other exciting news (not from mentioned interview - more on that when I get around to typing it up...):

Zero Hour.
(drum roll) ...

An EP, titled 'polymers are forever' will be released on 11th November on Remote Control (Australia) and on 14th November on XtraMile (Britain and Europe) with an initial small amount of imports being shoveled the way of the USA, that land mass which is a little to the left of Wales. Pleased doesn't quite cover it. The possibilities, literally, are end-ful.

Running order is 'polymers are forever'(*1), 'with apologies to emily pankhurst'(*2), 'new adventures', 'my wife is unhappy', 'dry hate' and 'destroywhitchurch.com'. It has a running time somewhere in the region of twenty one minutes and is 'very nice' ((c) my mother, last week). The first three songs are taken from the album sessions (see below) whilst the final three are earlier demos we didn't have the time, money or inclination to re-record. At this stage I have no earthly idea if the EP will end up being pressed on vinyl but the chances, as ever, are dramatically increased the more people ask.

Just saying.

'polymers are forever' (the song not the entire EP) will appear on the album 'the plot against common sense', which will be released in early 2012. More about this later(*4). We are really VERY VERY HAPPY with this record, which is perhaps ONE DAY away from being finished, whenever we can fit that in; I would like to apologise in advance to my bandmates and the cat(*5) for how drunk I get upon its completion.

The following live dates are confirmed before the end of the year -

20th November Cardiff, Clwb Ifor Bach (No, really?) with Saturdays Kids and one more TBC tickets

26th November Leeds, Cockpit (supports unconfirmed at this stage) tickets

29th November London, Hoxton Bar and Kitchen with Saturdays Kids and Fever Fever tickets

Australian dates are as follows -

4th December Perth, Rosemount

6th December Brisbane, The Zoo

8th December Sydney, Annandale Hotel

9th-11th December Meredith Music Festival

16th December Melbourne, The Corner

Ticket information is available here. Really. Can't wait. For all of it.

I appreciate your patience. Rather than blogging (and yes, I still hate that word) throughout the year in a non-commital manner I thought it best to wait until there was something solid to tell you. 'Hey guys - big news coming IN SIX OR SEVEN MONTHS' doesn't really cut it around my face. Or, indeed, my balls.(*6)

More to fellow follow.

falco
x

(*1) I have read some pretty demented comments about this song after just one radio play (and subsequent streaming). Gary Numan? Obvious Cure references? LIMP BIZKIT? None of these are things. None. Of. These. Listen again. With ears. EARS. (*3)

(*2) this is the DELIBERATE title of the song. A reviewer for a magazine, who shall remain nameless changed 'emily' to 'emmeline' on a setlist she was given earlier this year. How cute.

(*3) laptop speakers do not count.

(*4) and I ask you to interpret the word 'later' generously.(*7)

(*5) the odd seizure and shitting-on-the-doorstep episode aside, Chicken is doing well.

(*6) one balls reference per blog - new policy.

(*7) this is code for 'be patient'.

I can now verify that the band, now a four piece, finished the recording for the new LP today, so it should be in our quivering palms in the opening throes of 2012. We wont have to wait that long to hear the tracks however, as mentioned by the man himself, the Welsh juggernauts hit Brisbane on December 6 at the suitably sweaty Zoo. You can get tickets for that hotly anticipated show here - it will be ball-tearingly good.

Some Touring Deets For Brisbane Folks...

OK, so this is random and heaps of bands come and go, but I thought I should relay at least a few national and international acts that are doin their thang very soon in the capital of Queensland...

Starting small (in many ways), local band Tiny Spiders (whose 'Shadows' vid we showed yesterday) are vebnturing out this week for a quick tet-a-tet -

Friday September 9th @ The Crown & Anchor, Adelaide
/w Fake Tan, Beige Abrasion

Saturday September 10th @ The Cornish Arms, Melbourne
/w Passport For Amy, The Battery Kids

Plus a whole lot of other stuff, Im sure...

Akron/Family are closing the GOMA Surrealism Up Late program September 30th. Unfortunately this one is sold out, but they are playing interstate - hit their website for details. This will be an amazing show...

Monolithic Japanese post-rockers Mono are hitting the Hi Fi Bar full force on Wednesday October 5. This promises to be one of those shows that takes the quiet/loud dynamic to breaking-point extremes, where in the space between you will hear a pin drop, along with your jaw. Get tix here.

Alt-country heroes Okkervil River are playing the Hi Fi Bar Wednesday October 19, in what is their fifth sojourn to these fine shores. The Texan six-piece come armed with a swag of new songs from their recently released sixth album, I Am Very Far, which is a startling break from anything the band has ever created before. Terrifying and joyous, violent and serene, grotesque and romantic. It's a celebration of forces beyond their control. This is likely to sell out, so get on these ASAP.

This year's Meredith Music festival is massive, but with the current trickle of side-shows about to turn into a flood come December, missing out won't be a hard pill to swallow. Already some of the bands have announced shows, including the seminal Mudhoney (The Zoo, Monday December 5th), the abrasively brilliant Future Of The Left (The Zoo, Tuesday December 6th), and the untouchable Explosions In The Sky (Hi Fi Bar, Tuesday December 13).

Most of these international tours are put on by the brilliant Handsome Tours.

One In, All In...Side A Horse...

Brighton continue to pump out worthy yet quirky rock acts, don't they? Must be all the cockles... Everyone To The Anderson are the new band Im referring to, releasing their debut album The Man Born From Inside Of A Horse today via Unlabel. You can tell they like their dissonant, irreverent, verbose acts, from the lengthy album title to the lyrics held within these sinewy tracks. The instrumentation itself is a mixture of Antidotes-era Foals, 90s Dischord (think a lighter shade of Fugazi) as well as some of the more angular mid 90s Sub Pop acts. With a bit of Blood Red Shoes, Pulled Apart By Horses and Future Of The Left for good measure. Can too many influences spoil the broth? Au contraire, mon frere! The funniest thing is that whilst Everyone To The Anderson is never as good at the particular style that each of these aforementioned artists are cornerstones of, but by utilising each technique create something else entirely, a sound that is equal parts exciting and refreshing. They can brood - see 'Danzig High Flyer' - but are best when they are being bizarrely obtuse whilst pulling lefts and rights with wily precision. Check punchy 'Computermen' for their delicately built countenance to implode spectacularly, whilst opener 'High Brow, Low Brow, No Eyebrow' is the sum of all their parts. This is an assured debut - expect them to climb the UK live ladder this summer...

Best Things About 2010...by Kong

Manchester's Kong holds a special place in Sonic Masala's depraved heart. My first ever review (which was for Low Rise magazine) was at last year's A Fistful Of Fandango gigs. The main drawcard was to see Future Of The Left - who were fucking amazing, I must add - but the first act was Kong, and Paul and I were equally as impressed by their dissonant mess of Shellac-meets-Jesus Lizard sonic vomitings and drunken tirades - plus the red outfits and plastic masks were suitably kick arse. Since then Ive seen them 5 - yep, 5 - times, and regardless of how lucid or fucked up they are, they remain brilliant - one of the best live acts in the UK hands down. What follows is their views on what rocks their world. Not just for 2010, but for all eternity, not ever likely to be broken. May (insert higher being here) have mercy on your blackened souls...

Kong - Top ten of everything ever.

BURRITOS - This is just the perfect meal - meat , veg, rice , beans ,cheese and hot sauce all wrapped up and ready to gobble. No need for plates and forks and shit. They are like the predecessor to the protein pill.

JACK DANIELS & MILK - I like to smash a bottle every day on tour whether I need it or not but you gotta line your stomach with a pint of milk first or you will shit blood for a month.
I used to drink it with coke but the middle of my nose fell out.

BLOW JOBS - Bj's are cool cause they ain't considered cheating if you got a girlfriend and if you're drunk and close your eyes you can get your sweet little merch guy to do it for an extra fiver on his PD's.

DR MARTENS - This line of footwear is amazing, you can wear em to work at the office during the day then go out and kick the living shit outta someone in the evening, just remember to spit n rub the blood off in the morning , I got cherry reds cause Im dopey.

PADDED SOLE SOCKS - I got sent a box of these recently and they are the best things ever, they make your shitty plimsolls feel amazing and they absorb twice the amount of cum.

CHAT ROULETTE - Me and Lulu spent around 3 days straight on CR .... I think they should change the name of the site to cockcomparison.com ...it took the 3 days to see just 1 human taco!

ANALOGUE AFRICA - This is my new favourite record label , I love everything they are putting out ...I think their catalogue stops around the mid seventies but thats pretty much where my taste stops.

SCOUCE WOMEN - There is something about those girls from Liverpool ! I love going there, it's like going back to the 80's , side pony tails, global Hypercolour and Reebok Pump . They may spit Macdonald's milkshake all over you when they omit that white noise voice but I like women as rough as toast and reeking of vanilla Impulse.

DAVID LIEBE HART - This crazy mother fucker makes me shit my pants , he is pretty much the funniest man alive and I don't think he knows it .

VHS - Fuck Bluray! I dont care about counting the pubes hanging out of some porners riggot and I can pick up 200 videos for the price of Rambo on DVD. As a kid there was a video van that went round the streets pulling up and renting movies to lazy unemployed fat people - my car is pretty much that van now .

Kong will start 2011 with a bang, touring Japan with 65daysofstatic. If you dont catch them when they get back, you're dumb and we dont know you.

The Future Of The Left Is The Least Of Your Problems

Travels With Yourself And Another was one of the best albums of last year, and Cardiff's Future Of The Left are prepping their as yet unnamed follow up. They have gone through a line up change, with Kelson leaving the band halfway through the year, but as the picture above suggests, they are charging ahead with not one but two new additions to the fold. Falco is as raucous and acerbic as ever too, if the demo version of 'I Am The Least Of Your Problems' is anything to go by. Check out two other demos, ''My Wife Is Unhappy' and 'Notes On Achieving Orbit', here. They are doing a final show in Cardiff tonight, plus a couple shows in Germany and France, before they head Down Under for a tour in the summer sun - smart idea. They play in Brisbane January 3rd - wonder if Ill be lucky enough to catch them there???

FINALLY Introducing...Kong

I know that any post I put up here isn't going to do justice. So here goes.

Kong are close to, if not THE best live act in the UK right now. FACT.

I have seen them play every time they have been in London since they did A Fistful of Fandango last year. FACT.

On that bill were headliners Future Of The Left, another of my favourite UK acts (in fact vying with That Fucking Tank! and Kong for that title), and currently Kong (and Oceansize, but we wont mention too much about that) bassist Steve Hodson is playing with them. FACT.

Kong are scary, drunken, and above all fun. Its like watching the Jesus Lizard, Fugazi and Shellac in a whiskey-fuelled three-way - not that that would necessarily be fun... FACT.

Nothing more shall be said for the time being. Just watch the below clips, then get to the Old Blue Last on Aug 18. If you dont, then fuck off. FACT.

The Future Sounds Good

One of my top ten albums of last year was Travels With Myself And Another, Future of the Left’s sophomore effort since rising from the ashes of seminal upstarts Mclusky. After the promises made with first album Curses!, Travels… really took it up a notch, combining…that booming bass, the razor’s edge guitar, and the angry, growling lyrics and nasty vocals belonging to said Mr. Falkous.
Well, there is a lot of news on the Welsh maelstrom’s front. First of all, they have recorded
their 3rd album. Good to see they aren’t mucking around! More disconcerting though is
that ex-Jarcrew bassist Kelson Mathias is currently out of the mix, due to leaving the band (the
reason is unclear - read kelson's statement and Falkous' reply here.)

Thankfully the fill in replacement is none other than brilliantly menacing Kong bassist
Steve Hodson, a perfect replacement on all fronts. For how long though? Hopefully
this doesn’t impede too much on the gathering clusterfuck that Kong are generating –
they are my favourite small UK band at the moment, and should be pushing to blast all and
sundry away with a massive 2010…

Finally they are touring. I have tickets, but have just found out it clashes with a special
Pixies gig that I cant for my own sanity miss…

Still, here are the dates, and unless you have a life-or-death situation like mine, you have
no reason to miss it. May God have mercy on your soul…

Past future of the left

Digging through the photo archives of a time pre-Sonic Masala (yes there was time without us, crap wasn't it?) I found some pics taken of the mighty Future of the Left at a splendid evening put on by Club Fandango. Oh the fun we had that night! A must see band live.

It sounded a bit like this...
Future of the Left - Chin Music

...and looked a bit like this:
