What's At The End Of The Cosmic Dead?
It was late last year that a friend of mine in the States claimed to already know what 2016's best album would be. He had caught a whiff of Rainbowhead, the new album from Glaswegians The Cosmic Dead, and guaranteed that it would "melt my face into my asshole". Fair enough. I was a big fan of Easterfaust, and their recent splits with SM faves both old (Mugstar) and new (Girl Sweat) were spectacular also. Yet it's taken me til now to get into it - and wow. The fact that these four pieces are heavily improvised is not a surprise - the band has been doing their thing for over a decade now. The fact that these recordings were committed in a remote cottage in the Scottish Highlands also doesn't come as a surprise - The Cosmic Dead are notorious for their forceful melding of time and space with their incendiary, hypnotic performances, therefore being sequestered in some of the oldest environments in the world only helps to augment their aesthetic. What is surprising is how pleased you are when the first thundering hits of 'Human Sausage' bludgeon their way out of the speakers and everything sounds as they should be. Everything is present and accounted for - riffs that are as mountainous as they are monotonous, a colossal metronome; elemental synth that offers to be both retroactive and far-seeing; a rhythm section intent on marching for infinity into the abyss. 'Skye Burial' gives the requisite respite, some breathing space, before 'Inner C' roughs things up even further. But it's the B-side title track that truly astounds. That scritching metronome slide permeates the song, while basslines squirm, drums chatter and thump, other guitars come in and out with cantankerous, calamitous jagged edges, sometimes dissolving, only to resurrect in an altogether more brutal fashion. This is psych rock at its most base, blasted, bastardized - and brilliant.
Pick up Rainbowhead from Blackest Rainbow here. It's been selling like gangbusters on Norman Records, so expect this one to disappear in short order.

Don't Miss This Passing Of Magnetic Seasons Ya Mug(star)
Tonight Liverpool psychers Mugstar launch their Rock Action lauded album Magnetic Seasons at London's Electrowerkz (with excellent support from Henge and SM favourites Cavalier Song - check it out here). This is something to get excited about - it is a proggish noise fest, not afraid to stretch out and run (all bar one track is over five minutes long, with two exceeding the fifteen minute mark). The 70s space drawl and Sabbath sprawl of 'Unearth', the reverb subterfuge underline a psych drive on 'Flemish Weave' (with a harmonised nod to the likes of Clinic), the kosmiche cowboy groove of 'Time Machine', the patient, subdued flutter and float that looks to the cool blue of an endless rustic horizon of 'Sky West & Crooked' - these instrumental soundscapes feel both restless and timeless, improvised and envisioned, embryonic and set in stone. Those two monoliths I mentioned? 'Remember The Breathing' is a classic Krautrock spiral - not downward, but through time and space, a kosmiche mantra that breathes new life into the staid term "classic; while closer 'Ascension Island' plays at once like a static-drenched grey post-apocalypse bit of aural residue, and a titanic uprising, the elemental Gods of yore rising up, the colossi casting us in their hypnotic shadow without ever going close to toppling us into the sea. It's a magisterial exercise in undulating restraint. Mugstar are masters of their domain - pre-order this excellent double LP here. Grab tickets for the show on the door for a tenner.

Mugstar As Magnetic As Ever
Liverpool legends Mugstar are prepping to launch new record Magnetic Seasons through Rock Action Records (Mogwai's seminal label) in March, and have announced some shows (on at Electrowerkz in Feb that I will see you all at, right?) and a new track, 'Flemish Weave'. It is everything that makes Mugstar great - elegant space rock flamboyance burning away into a harder-edged motorik psych mantra.
Magnetic Seasons is available to pre-order here.
Mugstar play at London's Electrowerkz on February 26, Brighton's Green Door Store on April 1 and the Raw Power Festival in London on May 28-29.

Last of The 7" (Mug)Stars
Almost a month since we sat down and had a aural powwow. Sorry about the incommunicado. So here is the start of the comeback. I missed the Mugstar show in London earlier this year that was a part of Mogwai's 20th anniversary bashes (also playing? Tortoise, Lightning Bolt, Loop and GZA, FUCK). Chunklet put out this excellent 7" earlier in the year to coincide with the Liverpool veterans' US tour - and there are four left. The two tracks are exactly what you would expect - their acid-drenched spark and boil permeates through 'Kabuki Skull', an electrified percolating mess somewhere in the vicinity of a caffeinated Carlton Melton melting into the primordial sun; while 'Goat Head' eats into the heart of stoner rock's etched-in-granite mantras. Let's hope for something more soon - with a band as prolific as these guys, we shouldn't be waiting long.
