Practice Makes Perfect

I really enjoyed Kansas-based duo Folie Adieu's self-titled EP (read about it here - they were one of the first bands to send their physical music to me that I really enjoyed). Well once again it's taken me too long to get to this - sorry again guys! They brought out an LP not too long ago called Best Practices, and it continues to roll the ball forward, offering ten slices of understated shoegaze pop. Tonally spot on, there will be moments where the shadows of greater bands will darken the corners, but Andrea 's voice is perfect for these tracks, as are her sonorous guitar lines and Brian Winters' precise, no frills drumming. There is something warm and familiar about Best Practices that I can embrace, rather than feel the need to deride, and whilst I struggle to alight on what that subtle ingredient is, I will just say that Folie Adieu are living up to the promise.

Say Farewell To Psychological Disorder - Through Dream

I once again have to apologise. Andrea Drongoski, Brian Winters, I am sorry. I received the EP for your band Folie Adieu about two months ago - the first such release I got since moving back to Australia - and because I was still moving in and such it has filtered down into the depths that is my musical listening pile.

Well, today I make amends! This self-titled EP by the Wichita duo contains four slices of languid shoegaze pop, as ambient as it is awash with sonic sheen. The influences of the likes of Spacemen 3 and Slowdive, even Jefferson Airplane. Its beautiful in its simplicity, and washes over you in such a fashion that its criminal that there are only four tracks on offer here. I certainly hope we hear more in the future - and I promise to be more punctual with my replies!

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records. If we've posted up an mp3 of your stuff and you're not too keen on the idea, let us know and we'll happily take it down pronto.
