Fortunate Visions Of A Metallic Country

London experimentalists Vision Fortune are adept at creating dark repetitive dystopias that are hypnotic, off-kilter and off-putting - yet inimitably danceable. Taking a queue from likeminded twisted wizards Liars, their approach to music is devilish yet playful - like a cat playing with a dying mouse. Yet we all enjoy watching brutal animal documentaries, right? David Attenborough is a global treasure based on our morbid fascination with the dog-eat-dog world. So it goes with Vision Fortune's second album Country Music (their first on ATP Recordings - out in February 10), which they will be touring around Europe in March (I'll be in Australia when they play the Ace Hotel in London, unfortunately). 'Dry Mouth' has been out for a couple months, but it's good to delve into its metallic allure, a carapace of vice and disarray, once more.

And now there is this second taste, 'Back Crawl II', a seemingly more insular, percolating track that devolves into a chaotic mess of metal and mire. Excellent.

This Fortune Cookie Is Visionary!

Vision Fortune are two brothers spirits from London, UK, who have a great 7" out that is a little hard to explain - but Ill try. When i listened to 'Black Coral' and 'Void Of The Valley', it was as if Id wandered into a Middle Eastern confectionery store, eaten a whole lot of havla laced with barbiturates procured from Britain circa 1973, and then listened to the Dirtbombs played at quarter pace. That is a ridiculous analogy, I know, but there really is something otherworldly about these drone-centric concoctions - there is some Sun City Girls in there, some King Crimson, but it is truly incredible and stands on its own. Im a massive fan, and absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on more of this sweet, hallucinogenic candy - bad for you in so many ways, but the most addictive thing on earth...

It was early on a Sunday morning at ATP - A Nightmare Before Christmas 2009. After downing a fair few, at 4am we decided to cook a curry. It was during the consumption of this drunkenly delicious breakfast treat that we decided to actually do something about the music we talk about all the time.

So we started a blog – and Sonic Masala was born. Now into its seventh year, the blog has spread out to call both Australia and the UK its home (and the rest of the world), and has expanded to include gigs, festivals and a record label under its black umbrella. Come on, eat the noize.

If an mp3 is up here, it's because we have been talking about it, and think the whole world needs to know more. It's there to give you a little taste. Then, if you like, check out the band live and spend all your hard earned cash on their records.
