Haunted By The Sandwitches
Not an intentional run on from the food-obsessed holiday I've just had - but I am a little obsessed with Our Toast, the new record from San Francisco's The Sandwitches that came out a couple months ago. What's added to the obsession is that the trio appear to be splitting up after this. The way they shuffle along, blues imbued with bruises and steely-eyed determination underscoring the elegance, is captivating. There is a nervous energy here also, possibly due to the knowledge that the band are going their separate ways. It's beautiful, elegiac, wistful, effervescent - all the best parts of the Sandwitches' wild brew brought into sparkling focus.
The Sandwitches will be 'launching' the record in the US this month, then that is pretty much it. They will be selling a 7" as well, strangely called You Only Get What You Want, Baby (preorders through Southpaw Records here) - and if that were the case, the girls would be sticking around for some time yet. Nevertheless, if you are lucky enough to get to one of these shows, shed a tear for me.

Secret Segall Puts Me On A Cloud

You can never get enough Ty Segall - FACT. How about combining other such SF luminaries as Fresh & Onlys' Wymond Miles and Tim Cohen? Holy shit, right? Then introduce Hannah Lew (of Grass Widow), Sonny & The Sunsets, Vetiver, Kelley Stoltz and a host of others, and you have In A Cloud II: New Sounds From San Francisco, a vinyl compilation coming out through cool label Secret Seven Records (who have put out releases by The Sandwitches as well as Sonny & The Sunsets in the past). All tracks are previously unreleased, so this is a must have. As for the Ty Segall track? 'Swag' is one of his best throwaway tracks in a long time - seriously.

Here is the link to stream the album on Soundcloud. Also below are four tracks to take away with you - 'Swag' of course (I wouldn't leave you hanging!), alongside the two Fresh & Onlys boys' efforts and Chuck Prophet's 'Gotta Get Back'. In A Cloud II comes out in July - pre-order it here if you know what's good for ya!
Ty Segall - Swag
Chuck Prophet - Gotta Get Back

The Sandwitches

San Fransisco indie band The Sandwitches brought out Mrs Jones' Cookies last month through Empty Cellar, and its an understated gem of melancholic devotion and overwrought, desperate rock. I would write about it some more but Im running late to get my arse down to Rockinghorse Records for the Giants Of Science instore, so Ill just leave you with these two tracks and my implored request that you hunt this one down - may as well, seeing as you are scouring the record stores like everyone else!

Triple decker Sandwitches
The Sandwitches - Kiss Your Feet from joeyizzo on Vimeo.
Gorilla Vs Bear just premiered the new Vid from the Sandwitches, Kiss Your Feet. Taken from their 2009 L.P How To Make Ambient Sadcake, the vid was shot in a "remote cabin over the course of a single foggy night" in the middle of the woods in Northern California for that classic horror feel, directored by Joey Izzo. Spooky!
Here's another of my favorites from the album, which is more of a happy bounce-along stomp than a ghostly lovesick lament.
