Thank God For Sleepy Cheese
Sleepy Cheese is one pretty fucked up dude, if the four-track Thank God It Hurts EP (out now through Forged Artifacts) is anything to go on. A dark pop devolution deep fired in demonic fuzz and feral doom, replete with recorded phone messages of spurned (by love or other, it is not certain) women adding a morbid amusement and chagrin to the proceedings. So much heaviness hangs over proceedings - it's hard to know whether this is a masterpiece or the powerful inner turmoil that brings about one's destruction. It's probably both. There are similarities between this and the initial demos from Merchandise, before they succumbed to avant hipster silliness. You really need to get this - it's great.

FORGING BITS AND PIECES OR EARL
(Article by Fred Savage Beasts)
I am digging this new Earl Boykins record. What at first seemed like it was going to be a pretty straightforward deal took a nice turn for the strangely personal. Part confession, part airy feeling, and all in all pretty damn interesting, it feels really comfortable (but not too comfortable). And it’s growing on me big time. There are little licks in here worth going back for; scraps and bits to really pay attention to. It’s kinda like visiting some place you used to go on school holidays only to find out your parents used to score cheap weed there. And then finding out that you can get a family discount cause the guy remembers your mum or you have the same moustache as your dad, or something like that.
Get your hands on the record (out on tape through Forged Artifacts) now. And check out the rest of the roster while you’re there. The Los Angeles Police Department track is damn rad.

Some Prissy Grrrls Love Their Golden Bruises
Man, that headline could mean a number of terrible things - lucky that it stands for two pretty rad albums then, huh?
Glasgow trio Golden Grrrls have sprung out a collective love of 80s Antipodean indie pop, yet their sound is heavily indebted to their hometown's own pop heroes such as the Pastels. Whilst core duo Eilidh Rodgers and Ruari MacLean have a loose camaraderie that underpins their off-kilter tunes, newest member Rachel Aggs buoys everything with spirited guitar lines and melodies. Which makes sense, since Aggs is also a core member of scrap pop troublemakers Trash Kit, a band well acquainted with distorting traditional structures in a playfully boisterous manner.
You can grab Golden Grrrls (out through Slumberland Records) here.
Then we have Prissy Clerks, the new, heavier band from Total Babe's Clara Salyer. Staking a claim to be a female-fronted, 21st century Sebadoh, the quartet have pumped out an energetic debut with Bruise or Be Bruised (out through Forged Artifacts). They already have some stage presence, garnering supports for Corin Tucker (the Sleater Kinney connection is another obvious aural signifier), Caveman and Young Prisms, and slammed the power pop cherry on top with the coup of getting Brent Sigmeth (Superchunk) to help out with recording duties.
You can get Bruise Or Be Bruised here.
