You are correct, there are some 12 inches that we have which we charge $20 for, but we in no way make $15 off each of those records. Firstly, those records that $20 are pressings of 500 copies. I'm going to break-down the exact costs of a recent 500 pressing so you get the idea. The sleeves are tip-on from Stoughton - these are high quality sleeves that we are all really fond of. We've always hated the way generic sleeves feel / wear and in general look. To do such a small run it costs a lot of money. The jacket itself is 4.50/Unit. The vinyl (from Rainbo) is 1.10 / Unit. Marketing sticker is .35/Unit. Adding in metalwork, test pressings, assembly and shipping, that brings the grand total to $4,400.00. Making the per unit cost approximately $9.00. Now, this does not factor in marketing, staff, band copies (the way Mexican Summer deals are set up the band gets 20% of the run of record and we split digital profits), hookers and sour diesel. When a record sells for $20 at a retailer, they buy it from us for $12.98. So, without the above mentioned even incorporated we make a whopping $4 / Unit or $2,000 total . . . and that's being generous. We realize $20 is a lot for an EP, and in 2011 we're going to try and be a bit more creative with our packaging to keep the pricing down while not losing anything in quality. However, to say that we bring in $15 a record is absurd. All that said, we do appreciate the folks that are buying the albums and we've got a ton of great stuff lined up for 2011. Thank you for putting us on your Top Ten List.jeffhttp://www.mexicansummer.comnoreply@blogger.com
